With the arrival of New Year celebrations, you might wonder if there will be an extra day in 2024. The new year 2024 is something special because there is an extra day in February that day is February 29, 2024. This happened due to the synchronization of the Earth’s clock with the solar clock.

The Earth takes over 365 days to complete one orbit or revolution around the Sun. So every four years this adds an extra day that is called a leap day. The calendar year consists of 365 days in normal years. These “normal years” roughly identify the days it takes the Earth to complete the one revolution in orbit around the Sun. But 365 is an approximate number. It takes the Earth 365.2 2190 days to complete one revolution in orbit around the Sun, or 365 days, 5 hours, 8 minutes, and 56 seconds. This “sidereal” year is something longer than the calendar year, and the extra 5 hours, 8 minutes, and 56 seconds must be accounted for this reason.

This would be upsetting, even devastating because about 700 years ago we expected summer in the Northern Hemisphere to be in June, but in reality it started in December!

The previous leap year arrived in 2020 and after the new year 2024, the next leap year is expected in 2028.

For a long time, these extra  44 + minutes may also be the reason to extend the seasons in our calendar dates. Due to this, after every four years, not a leap year.

The fact is that, if a year is divided by  100 and it is not divided by 400 then this time leap is eliminated. The year 2000 was a leap year, for example, but the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not considered as a leap year. The next time a leap year will be eliminated is in the year 2100.

Our planet Earth takes about 365.2 22 days to complete one revolution of orbit around the Sun, which is normally longer than 365 days. The days of a calendar year are usually approximated to 365. The leap day is a missing day that we add to our calendar approximately every four years.

The reason behind the existence of leap years

The space agency defined as a year is the amount of time that a planet takes to complete a revolution to its star once. A day is the quantity of time that a planet takes to finish one rotation on its axis. It takes Earth approximately 365 days and 6 hours to complete revolutions around the Sun. The  Earth takes approximately 24 hours a day to rotate on its axis. So, our year is not an exact number of days. This is the approximate number of days in one year. Due to this, the leap year has 365 days.

Summary

The leap years found because the revolution of the planet around the sun and the revolution of the earth on its axis (day) are not accurate, they are approximate. This thing is not new only for planet Earth but this is happening with another planet in the solar system. For example, Mars has more leap years than normal years.
